Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax to a price, or work backwards to find how much tax is already included in a total. Several rates can be stacked — state, county and city — and you can exclude part of the price from tax.
Adding versus extracting tax
Adding tax is straightforward: multiply the net price by the combined rate. Extracting tax is the reverse and is where people usually go wrong — you cannot simply subtract the rate, because the rate was applied to the smaller net figure. Dividing the gross by one plus the rate is the correct method.
- Add tax to a net price
- Extract tax from a tax-inclusive total
- Stack multiple rates (state, county, city)
- Exclude a tax-free portion of the price
- Effective rate worked out for you
A worked example of the trap
A 10% rate applied to 100 gives 110. But taking 10% off 110 gives 99, not 100. To recover the original you divide 110 by 1.1, which gives exactly 100. The extract mode here uses that correct division.
