Free Online Word & Character Counter
The Word & Character Counter is a free online tool that instantly counts words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time as you type. It is perfect for writers, students, bloggers, and SEO professionals who need to meet specific word count requirements.
How to use the Word Counter
- 1 Paste or type your text into the box above. Every count updates on each keystroke — there is nothing to submit.
- 2 Read the headline numbers first: words, characters, and estimated reading time.
- 3 Check the with-spaces and without-spaces character counts when a strict limit applies, such as a meta description or a social post.
- 4 Paste new text straight over the old to reset — there is no need to clear it first.
How to Use the Word Counter
Simply type or paste your text into the textarea above. The tool updates all statistics in real-time — there is no need to click any button. Every keystroke triggers a recalculation, so your numbers are always accurate.
- Paste an essay to check if it meets the minimum word requirement
- Count characters for social media posts (Twitter/X, meta descriptions)
- Estimate reading time for blog posts and articles
- Count sentences and paragraphs for structural analysis
What Gets Counted?
The tool provides multiple metrics simultaneously:
- Words — separated by whitespace, punctuation attached to words is stripped
- Characters (with spaces) — total length of the text including spaces
- Characters (no spaces) — total length excluding spaces
- Sentences — counted by detecting sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?)
- Paragraphs — counted by detecting double line breaks
- Reading Time — estimated at 200 words per minute (average adult reading speed)
Why Use a Word Counter?
Word count matters in many contexts. Academic essays often have strict word limits. Blog posts perform best at certain lengths for SEO. Social media platforms enforce character limits. Meta descriptions for SEO should stay under 160 characters.
This tool runs entirely in your browser using vanilla JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device — ensuring complete privacy and instant results with zero server round-trips.
What counts as a word here?
A word is any run of non-whitespace characters. "Well-known" counts as one word, and so does a number such as "2026". Multiple spaces, tabs and line breaks are collapsed before counting, so sloppy pasting does not inflate the total.
Sentences are detected from terminal punctuation (. ! ?) and paragraphs from blank lines. If you paste text from a PDF, check the paragraph count — PDFs often break lines mid-sentence, which inflates it.
Frequently asked questions
Does it count words the same way as Microsoft Word?
For everyday prose, yes. Both treat a run of letters, digits and apostrophes separated by whitespace as one word. Expect the occasional difference with hyphenated compounds and em-dashes, where Word sometimes splits a token and this counter does not.
How is the reading time estimated?
At 200 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for an adult. A 1,000-word article therefore shows around 5 minutes. Technical or academic text is usually read more slowly than that.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The counting runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device and no copy is stored anywhere.
