Free Hex to Text Converter

Convert hexadecimal values to readable text and back. Handles UTF-8 characters, accepts common separators (spaces, commas, 0x prefixes, backslashes), and warns about invalid input.

The opposite conversion is ASCII to Hex; for other bases use the Number Base Converter, and for binary payloads see Base64 to Hex.

How to use the Hex to Text

  1. 1 Paste the hexadecimal bytes — with or without spaces, and with or without 0x prefixes.
  2. 2 Choose how the bytes should be decoded, which matters as soon as the text is not plain ASCII.
  3. 3 Read the decoded text, or switch direction to encode text into hex.
  4. 4 Copy the result in either direction.

How to Use

Paste hex bytes on the left and press Hex → Text, or type text and press Text → Hex. Non-hex characters are ignored so pasted dumps work straight away.

  • UTF-8 / Unicode support
  • Accepts spaces, commas, 0x, \x, dashes as separators
  • Shows byte and character counts
  • Copy the result with one click

Where hex is used

Hexadecimal is a compact way to represent binary data. It appears in file signatures, colour codes, debugging tools, network packet dumps and character encodings. Converting a hex string to text is often the fastest way to read an unknown payload.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get strange characters instead of readable text?

Almost always an encoding mismatch. The bytes are probably UTF-8 or Windows-1252 text being read as the wrong character set. Try the other decoding options — accented letters and emoji need multi-byte UTF-8, and decoding each byte on its own will never produce them.

Why are hex bytes always in pairs?

Because one byte is 8 bits and each hex digit carries 4 bits, so it takes exactly two hex digits per byte. An odd number of digits means a byte is incomplete, which usually points at a copy-paste error.

Does the tool need spaces between the bytes?

No. Spaces, commas, colons and 0x prefixes are all tolerated and ignored, so you can paste output straight from a hex dump, a debugger or a packet capture without cleaning it up first.
