Free Online Text to Slug Converter
The Text to Slug Converter turns any title or phrase into a clean, URL-friendly slug. It lowercases text, strips special characters, and joins words with hyphens or underscores — perfect for permalinks, filenames, and SEO URLs.
How to use the Text to Slug
- 1 Type or paste the title you want a URL slug for.
- 2 Choose your separator — hyphens are the web standard, underscores are common for filenames.
- 3 Accents and non-Latin characters are transliterated automatically, so "Café Crème" becomes "cafe-creme".
- 4 Copy the slug and paste it into your CMS or route definition.
How to Use
Type or paste your text on the left — the slug is generated live on the right. Switch the separator between a hyphen and an underscore with the dropdown.
- Accented characters are simplified (é → e) for safe URLs
- Repeated or trailing separators are cleaned automatically
- Use "Copy" to grab the slug for your CMS or codebase
What Is a Slug?
A slug is the human-readable part of a URL (e.g. /blog/my-first-post). Clean slugs improve readability and search ranking, and avoid broken links from spaces or symbols.
Frequently asked questions
Should a URL use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator but historically treated underscores as joining words, so "red-shoes" is read as two words and "red_shoes" as one. Use hyphens for anything search engines will read.
Are stop words removed from slugs?
By default they are kept, because removing them can change meaning ("the-who" would become "who"). Enable stop-word removal if you prefer shorter slugs and your page titles are long.
What happens to emoji and symbols?
They are stripped, since they cannot be safely represented in a URL path. Emoji in a slug would be percent-encoded into a long unreadable string, which is worse for both users and search engines.
