Frequently asked questions

Why are months and years ambiguous?

Because they vary in length. A month is 28 to 31 days and a year is 365 or 366, so any single figure is an average. This converter uses the conventional averages of 30.44 days per month and 365.25 days per year; if you need an exact date, use the date difference calculator instead.

Why is a day not exactly 86,400 seconds?

It usually is, but not always. Earth rotation is not perfectly steady, so leap seconds are occasionally inserted to keep civil time aligned with the sky. Unix time ignores them, which is why it is only an approximation of elapsed physical time over long spans.

How many seconds are in a year?

About 31,557,600 for a 365.25-day average year, or 31,536,000 for a plain 365-day year. The difference matters in finance and science, where "per year" usually means the average including leap years.
