SHA-256 Hash Generator

Generate a SHA-256 hash from any text input.

Free SHA-256 Hash Generator

The SHA-256 Hash Generator computes a SHA-256 checksum of any text using your browser’s native Web Crypto API. Everything stays on your device.

For keyed integrity checks use the HMAC Generator rather than a bare hash, and reach for SHA-512 when you want a longer digest. Unrecognised hash? The Hash Identifier will name it.

How to use the SHA-256 Hash

  1. 1 Type or paste the text you want to hash into the box.
  2. 2 The 256-bit hash appears instantly as a 64-character hexadecimal string.
  3. 3 Check the length shown — a SHA-256 digest is always exactly 64 hex characters, whatever the input size.
  4. 4 Copy the hash, or switch to the file-hash mode to verify a download instead of text.

How to Use

Type or paste text and the SHA-256 hash appears instantly. Copy it for integrity verification and digital signatures.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reverse a SHA-256 hash back to the original?

No. Hashing is one-way by design — there is no key that undoes it. The only practical attack is guessing candidate inputs and hashing them to compare, which is why a hash of a weak password is still crackable while a hash of a long random one is not.

Should I use SHA-256 to store user passwords?

No. Use a dedicated password-hashing function such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2. SHA-256 is deliberately fast, which is exactly what an attacker wants; password hashes need to be slow and salted. Use SHA-256 for integrity checks instead.

What is SHA-256 used for in practice?

Verifying that a file arrived unchanged, content-addressing in Git and IPFS, and signing in TLS certificates. In all of those the goal is detecting tampering, not hiding the data.
