Color HEX RGB HSL Text on it

Random Color Generator

Generate random colors one at a time or as a harmonious palette. Copy any colour as HEX, RGB or HSL, and check instantly whether text on it would need to be light or dark.

Once you have a colour, the Hex to RGB Converter shows its other notations and the Color Contrast Checker tells you whether text will be readable on it.

How to use the Random Color

  1. 1 Generate a colour to get its hex, RGB and HSL values together.
  2. 2 Lock a colour you like, then regenerate to explore variations around it.
  3. 3 Switch to palette mode for a set of colours that work together.
  4. 4 Copy any value in the format your code needs.

How It Works

Individual colours are drawn from the full 24-bit space. Palettes are built using colour-wheel harmony rules so the results look intentional rather than muddy, and each swatch reports its contrast requirement.

  • Single colour or palette mode
  • Harmony rules: analogous, complementary, triadic
  • HEX, RGB and HSL values
  • Automatic light/dark text advice
  • Click any swatch to copy it

Frequently asked questions

Which colour format should I copy?

Hex for CSS and design tools, RGB when you need it in a canvas or a legacy API, and HSL when you intend to adjust the colour by hand — because in HSL you can darken or desaturate by changing one number, which is impossible to do predictably in hex.

How do I know if a random colour is readable?

Check the contrast ratio rather than trusting your eye. A colour that looks fine on your monitor can fail badly on a phone in daylight. Use the contrast checker to measure the ratio against white and black text — 4.5:1 is the usual minimum for body text.

What makes a set of colours harmonious?

Shared relationships rather than random values. Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, analogous ones sit next to each other, and triadic sets are evenly spaced. Working in HSL makes these easy to build, since you can hold saturation and lightness steady and rotate the hue.
