Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head?
Double the Celsius figure and add 30. It is not exact — 20 °C gives 70 instead of 68 — but it is close enough for weather. For an exact conversion, multiply by 9/5 and add 32.
Why does -40 appear in both Celsius and Fahrenheit?
It is the one temperature where the two scales coincide. Solving C = (C × 9/5) + 32 gives C = -40, so -40 °C and -40 °F are the same physical temperature.
Is Kelvin ever written with a degree symbol?
No. Kelvin is an absolute scale, so it is written as "300 K", not "300 °K". It also has no negative values — 0 K is absolute zero, the point at which molecular motion stops.
