List Randomizer

Shuffle a list into a random order, or sort, reverse, deduplicate, rotate and sample from it. The shuffle uses the browser's cryptographic random source, so the order is genuinely unbiased rather than merely hard to predict.

Split a list into groups with the Team Picker, or draw a subset with the Lottery Number Generator.

How to use the List Randomizer

  1. 1 Paste your list, one item per line.
  2. 2 Choose the operation — shuffle, sort, reverse, remove duplicates or take a random sample.
  3. 3 Set the sample size if you are sampling.
  4. 4 Copy the result, or re-run the shuffle for a different order.

How to Use

Paste one item per line, then choose an operation. Shuffle produces a new random order each time you press it. Pick N draws a random subset, which is what you want for a raffle or a random selection.

  • Cryptographically fair shuffle
  • Sort ascending or descending
  • Reverse, rotate and deduplicate
  • Random sample of N items
  • Keeps your original list untouched

Why crypto random matters

The ordinary random function in JavaScript is a fast pseudo-random generator that is fine for games but can be biased and is predictable if the seed is known. The cryptographic source used here is designed to be uniformly distributed and unpredictable, which is what you need for a fair draw.

Frequently asked questions

Is the shuffle fair?

Yes — it uses a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the cryptographic random source, which gives every possible ordering the same probability. Naive shuffles that sort by a random comparator look random but are measurably biased toward certain arrangements.

What does sampling do differently from shuffling?

Shuffling reorders the whole list; sampling returns a subset of a chosen size and leaves the rest out. Use sampling when you need to pick winners or select a random subset, and shuffling when you just want to randomise the order of everything.

Does removing duplicates ignore case and spaces?

It compares trimmed entries, so stray spaces at the ends of lines do not create false duplicates. Matching is case-sensitive by default — if you want "Apple" and "apple" treated as one, normalise the case first, since that is a deliberate choice rather than an obvious one.
