Free SHA-1 Hash Generator
The SHA-1 Hash Generator computes a SHA-1 checksum of any text using your browser’s native Web Crypto API. Everything stays on your device.
SHA-1 is deprecated for signatures; move to the SHA-256 Generator or SHA-512 Generator when you can. For non-security checksums the MD5 Generator is still the quickest option.
How to use the SHA-1 Hash
- 1 Enter the text you want to hash.
- 2 Read the 40-character hexadecimal digest.
- 3 Switch between hex and Base64 output if your system expects one of them.
- 4 Copy the digest into your code, config or ticket.
How to Use
Type or paste text and the SHA-1 hash appears instantly. Copy it for checksums and legacy verification. (Note: SHA-1 is no longer recommended for security-sensitive use.)

Frequently asked questions
Is SHA-1 still safe to use?
Not for anything security-related. Practical collision attacks were demonstrated in 2017, and chosen-prefix collisions have since become cheap enough for real attacks. It remains fine for non-adversarial uses like cache keys or deduplication, where nobody is trying to forge a match.
Why can I not reverse a SHA-1 hash back to the text?
Because hashing is deliberately one-way — it discards information, mapping any input to a fixed 160 bits. Many inputs can produce the same digest in theory, though finding one is infeasible. Attackers instead guess inputs and hash them, which is why password hashing needs a slow algorithm like bcrypt.
How long is a SHA-1 hash?
160 bits, written as 40 hexadecimal characters. Compare SHA-256 at 64 characters and SHA-512 at 128 — the length alone often tells you which algorithm produced a digest, which is what the hash identifier tool uses.
