Frequently asked questions

Why does the location shown not match my city?

IP geolocation resolves to the ISP’s registered allocation, not your physical device. If your provider routes traffic through a regional hub, that hub’s city is what appears — it can be hundreds of miles from where you actually are.

Does a VPN change what is shown here?

Yes. A VPN routes your traffic through the provider’s server, so the IP, ISP and location shown are the VPN’s rather than yours. That is precisely the point of using one.

Is my IP address private information?

It is personal data under regulations such as GDPR, but it is also necessarily visible to every server you connect to. It does not reveal your street address, though it usually narrows your location to a city or region.
