Free Weight & Mass Converter

The Weight Converter converts between metric and imperial mass units — milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, ounces, pounds, and stones. The result updates as you type.

Cooking measures by volume more often than weight, so the Cooking Converter and Volume Converter are the usual companions.

Frequently asked questions

Is mass the same as weight?

Strictly, no. Mass is how much matter an object contains and is measured in kilograms; weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, measured in newtons, and it changes if you go to the Moon. In everyday use — and in this converter — "weight" means mass, which is the convention on packaging, in gyms and in recipes.

Why is an ounce of flour not the same as an ounce of gold?

Because they are two different ounces. Everyday goods use the avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g), while precious metals use the troy ounce (31.1035 g) — about 10% heavier. So an ounce of gold weighs more than an ounce of flour, and jewellers always mean troy.

How many grams are in a pound?

Exactly 453.59237 grams. The pound has been defined against the kilogram since 1959, so the conversion is exact rather than approximate, and it is the reason pound conversions never drift no matter how many times you round-trip them.
